Obesity Related Medical Conditions
Needing to lose weight is not just about looking and feeling better. Most of our patients have some form of weight-related medical condition. Those that don't are aware that their unhealthy weight exposes them to developing conditions in the future.
Medial professionals call these "co-morbidities", or "associated illnesses".
Health risks which are raised with obesity include:
- Diabetes (type 2) - 90% of all patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese
- Hypertension
- Blook pressure
- Cholestorol
- Osteo-arthritis
- Knee and joint problems
- Certain cancers
- Cardio-vascular/ heart related conditions
- Stroke
- Gall bladder
- Depression
- Low self-esteem
- Heartburn / reflux
- Sleep apnoea
This list is not comprehensive. Equally, being overweight does not mean that you will get any of these conditions. However, researchers have proven that the risks are increased if you are of an unhealthy weight.
Bariatric Surgery - a Cure?
Losing weight can greatly improve or cure the symptoms of the above list. In fact, there have been many studies showing that weight loss surgery is more effective than slimming down with diet and exercise alone and therefore provides faster and more sustainable results.
- Research shows that following bariatric surgery, 78% of diabetic patients had complete resolution of their diabetes and 87% saw either a complete cure or improvement
- Gastric banding - 56.7% of patients had resolution of diabetes
- Gastric bypass - 80.3% of patients were "cured"
- Patients with early-onset knee osteoarthritis who underwent bariatric surgery lost an average of 57 pounds within the first six months and significantly improved their knee pain, stiffness and physical function
- Patients with sleep apnoea report it literally disappears as the weight starts to come off
- A scientific study showed that gastric bypass can reduce the risk of death by 40% over a 7-year period due to the weight lost
