IPL Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoos are very fashionable, but their key advantage - permanence - is the key problem.

As more and more people choose to have tattoos, there is a huge growth in patients wanting them removed for a number of reasons, for example:

  • Tattoos with a previous partner's name
  • Designs that you no longer like
  • Wanting to look professional for the work place
  • Amateur tattoos

Laser treatment can highly effectively and safely remove your tattoo and is now considered the best method of tackling this problem.

IPL Laser Treatment

Tattoo ink particles are too large for the body’s immune system to remove naturally.

IPL laser passes a very short pulse of high power laser light through the skin.

This breaks the tattoo ink into smaller particles, which the body is able to remove naturally.

A course of treatments is required.  Depending on the tattoo size and colours used, it could be around 8-12 treatments before the full results are seen, although it tends to be fewer treatments for amateur tattoos.

With each treatment the tattoo pigment becomes successfully lighter and will eventually fade completely.

The lasers do cause discomfort during treatment, like a prick or a sharp pinch.  It is similar to the pain of getting the tattoo.  After the blast of IPL laser, the pain fades quickly.  Painkillers may be used if required, but this is not normally required.

Patients do tend to get used to the pain and find it easier with each treatment.

Aftercare

Any reddening and swelling of the skin will be localised and normally lasts for less than 24 hours.  Some temporary bruising may occur.

Some patients may blister, which is quite normal as the body works to break down and reabsorb the tattoo ink.  Such blistering is temporary, does not require treatment and will usually clear within days.

Most patients can resume most normal activities immediately, though vigorous activities and strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 24 hours after treatment.

The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun.

Darker skinned patients may notice some lightening of the skin (depigmentation). This usually returns to normal in 6 to 12 months.

There is normally no lasting damage to the skin. Very occasionally, mild changes may occur in skin texture.
