Ear Correction
If you have large, protruding or misshapen ears, then you may be considering simple ear surgery to have them corrected. Abnormally shaped ears can cause great embarrassment. Many of our patients report being teased at school and having to style their hair a certain way or even wear a hat to disguise them.
Otoplasty is one of our most common procedures and is chosen by both men and women to correct this embarrassing problem once and for all.
This procedure is ideal for a number of conditions:
- "Pinning back" protruding ears to sit closer to the patient's head - this is the most common application
- Reducing the overall size of your ears
- Correcting any irregularities in the shape of the ears
Patients report the dramatic difference correcting their ears has on their lives as well as their appearance. The procedure has long-lasting results. After healing, friends and family tend to forget about it until they look back on photographs.
About the Otoplasty Procedure

3.
- Before surgery, this patient's protruding ears dominated his face
- The Surgeon carefully removed a section of cartelage from behind the ear, to bring the ear to sit closer to the patient's head and reduce the "sticking out" effect
- After surgery, the patient has neat ears which sit nicely against his head
Your Consultation
Your free consultation is a good opportunity to discuss ear correction surgery with a surgeon.
Your surgeon will look at your medical history and listen very carefully to your requirements before giving you honest, expert advice on what sort of outcome you could expect.
Your Surgeon will advise on the benefits as well as the risks of undertaking facial surgery and will outline what to expect at the hospital, explaining the procedure in detail and the recovery/healing process as well as aftercare.
Post-Operative Healing
Eveyone is different, but you should prepare for some early pain and discomfort, which can be managed with normal painkillers.
After your surgery is completed, you will have a bandage or dressing applied in the operating theatre. This will normally stay in place for 7 days while your ears heal and settle in the new position. There will also be some swelling and facial bruising after surgery, so most people choose to stay at home and relax for that period to avoid being seen in public.
After about a week, you will come into clinic to have your dressings removed at which point you will fully see the shape of your ears.
Depending on the nature of your procedure, scarring tends to be located behind the ear and can be disguised with careful hair styling while it heals.
This procedure is purely cosmetic, there will be no effect on your ability to hear sound.
