Breast Reduction

breastsAlso known as a "mammoplasty", the breast reduction is a procedure that will reduce the size and weight of a woman's breasts.

Far from being a blessing, an over-large bust size can cause real discomfort with back and shoulder pain being very comment.  Large breasts can also be embarrassing and distressing giving a person confidence issues.  It can also make clothing choices very difficult, with sufferers having to buy over-large unflattering tops simply to fit over the breasts.

A skilled surgeon will pay attention not just to the physical apsects of a mammoplasty, reducing the size and weight of the breasts.  It is vitally important to recognise that a good aesthetic result will be required to produce well-proportioned, perfectly shaped, even breasts.

About the Breast Reduction Procedure

breastreduction-before

breastreduction-afterIn order to reduce the size of your breasts, the surgeon will carefully and skilfully remove excess skin and breast tissue.  He or she will also take care to reshape the breast and reposition the nipple to create a higher bustline.

After the procedure, the breasts are smaller and the nipples have been positioned higher to ensure a good aesthetic result.

Even with dressings and any initial swelling, your breasts will immediately feel smaller and lighter after surgery and you should notice your posture improve quickly as a result.

Your Consultation

Your free consultation is a good opportunity to discuss breast reduction with a surgeon.  They understand the physical limitations of having larger breasts and the associated problems they cause.

Your surgeon will look at your medical history, listen very carefully to your requirements and give you honest, expert advice on whether breast reduction surgery is right for you and how much smaller you could expect to go.

They will advise on the benefits as well as the risks of undertaking breast reduction surgery and will outline what to expect at the hospital, explaining the procedure in detail and the recovery/healing process as well as aftercare.

We take the consultation stage very seriously at The Hospital Group and provide this service free and without any further obligation, so that you can be fully informed about your cosmetic surgery options.

Future Pregnancies

If you are planning more children in the future then you should be aware that the effects of pregnancy may stretch the breasts again.  Also, unlike the breast augmentation procedure, during a breast uplift the Surgeon will very often have to cut the milk ducts while the breasts are being repositioned.  If this happens, you will be unable to breastfeed in the future.  Do discuss any plans for children with your surgeon if you are considering a mastopexy.

Post-Operative Healing

post_op_braEveyone is different, but you should prepare for some early pain and discomfort after breast reduction.  It is major surgery and there will be a recovery stage.

Your surgeon will advise on the most appropriate garments to wear after surgery and during the first few weeks of healing.

Many surgeons recommend post-operative bras in order to provide compression and support after surgery. These are available from our clinics or in our online shop.  Do ask your surgeon or Patient Care Coordinator, as surgeons' techniques and advice can vary.

There will be initial bruising which should last 7-10 days.

The scar from surgery will take time to fade fully - up to a year in some cases.  The breast reduction scar will normally run from the nipple to the crease under the breast in an inverted "T" shape.  You will also have scarring around the nipple where it has been repositioned.  All surgery results in some scarring and all scars take time to soften and fade, so you will not see the final appearance of your scar until up to a year after surgery. However, it will fade over time and be hidden by normal clothing.

The Hospital Group has developed exclusive Tamanu Balm to help with the healing of scars after surgery.  Tamanu Balm contains a variety of exclusively selected natural ingredients which possess a unique capacity to promote the formation of new tissue, therefore accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin. The balm is also moisturizing to help smooth and soften the skin as well as reduce the visible appearance of scars.  This product is available in our clinics or from the online shop.
