Breast Augmentation (Enlargement)

breast_augmentationThe breast augmentation or boob job has been the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in Ireland for many years and with more and more enquiries being received, it looks set to continue.

The breast enlargement procedure very simply adds volume to the breast, making it larger and rounder with the addition of modern breast implants.  This procedure is ideal for:

  • Women who are naturally flat-chested
  • Those that feel that their breasts are out of proportion with the rest of their bodies and want a "curvier", more feminine shape
  • Women who have lost volume in their breasts, either through breast feeding, weight loss, pregnancy or ageing

Patient Stories

When you are considering cosmetic surgery, it's really helpful and interesting to see what results other patients have had.

  • Working Mum Debbie Lister, pictured here, had a breast augmentation to boost her from an A to a DD+ cup.  You can see Debbie's video story here
  • Model Ally Garvey had surgery in June 2009 and shared the story on TV3's Modern Ireland programme.  Since then, she's had more modelling work due to breast implant surgery.  Ally's Breast Augmentation Story
  • After appearing on "Ladette to Lady", Kelly Simpson completed her transformation with a breast augmentation to boost her curves and achieve a more feminine shape.  Kelly's Breast Augmentation Story

If you come for a consultation, many of our staff have had surgery and can talk about their own experiences first hand.

Deciding on Surgery

Deciding on any form of cosmetic surgery is a big decision and you'll need to know you're in safe hands and be confident in your choice.

Your Consultation - Surgeon's Advice

A good surgeon will look at your medical history, listen very carefully to your requirements and give you honest, expert advice on which form of breast surgery is most suitable for you.

Implants simply add volume to the breasts to make them larger.  Depending on the amount of loose skin you have and how large you want to go, you may also consider a breast uplift (mastopexy) or an uplift with implants.  An uplift allows the surgeon to reshape the breast if it has started to sag and give a "perter" profile.

Your surgeon will also advise on what to expect at the hospital, explaining the procedure in detail and outlining the recovery/healing process as well as aftercare.

It is important to recognise that although relatively straightforward , breast augmentation is a surgical procedure carried out under general anaesthetic.  We take every aspect of your care very seriously and will provide you with a Patient Information Booklet outlining the risks of surgery as well as what to expect from your recovery.

Post-Operative Healing

post_op_braYour surgeon will advise on the most appropriate garments to wear after surgery and during the first few weeks of healing.

Many surgeons recommend post-operative bras and/or chest bands in order to provide compression and support after surgery. These are available from our clinics or in our online shop.

Do ask your surgeon or Patient Care Coordinator, as different procedures and surgeons will have different advice.

The scar from surgery will take time to fade fully - up to a year in some cases.  The scar for implants alone is surprisingly small and will be hidden by underwear or a bikini top after it has softened and faded.  If you opt for a breast uplift, then the scar will be larger, running from the nipple to the crease under the breast in an inverted "T" shape, although again it will fade and be hidden by normal clothing.

The Hospital Group has developed exclusive Tamanu Balm to help with the healing of scars after surgery.  Tamanu Balm contains a variety of exclusively selected natural ingredients which possess a unique capacity to promote the formation of new tissue, therefore accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin. The balm is also moisturizing to help smooth and soften the skin as well as reduce the visible appearance of scars.  This product is available in our clinics or from the online shop.

Your Decision

Only you can decide whether the operation is right for you, but your surgeon and Patient Care Coordinator will help you make an informed choice with individual advice based on our years of expertise.
